What is a border pass?

A border pass is a short-term travel document for crossing the border into Laos (Lao PDR). It's ideal for a trip to Vientiane or quick errands near the border, and comes with eligibility, area and length-of-stay conditions set by the checkpoint.

Passport or border pass?

A passport and a border pass work differently, and the border pass comes with more area restrictions and conditions. If you're visiting several cities, staying a few days or want more flexibility, a passport is usually the easier choice.

Before using a border pass, check:

  • Whether you're eligible to apply for one
  • Whether it's valid for the areas you want to visit
  • Whether your documents are still valid
  • What the checkpoint's conditions are on your travel date

Documents you'll usually need

  • Original Thai national ID card (not expired)
  • For children: birth certificate / documents required by officials
  • Travel details (departure and return dates)
  • Fees at the rates set by the checkpoint
